You can find the mural on the side of the 276 Art Exchange building at 142 West Lane Street. This building itself is a piece of history, originally housing the Shawnee Telephone Company, known today as Shawnee Communications. It serves as a bridge between the past and present of Equality's telecommunications industry. Painted by Christine DeShazo from Murphysboro, the mural beautifully illustrates the evolution of local mineral-based industries that have shaped the village, from Native Americans producing salt in prehistoric times to the once-booming brickmaking and coal mining sectors.
The unveiling ceremony is scheduled for 10:30 AM. Local officials, community leaders, and the artist will be present. This event is not just a celebration of Equality’s history but also an opportunity to look ahead, welcoming everyone to join in this meaningful part of the IL250 celebrations.
