Sculpture "Pursuit of Happiness" by artist Nathan Adeosun This week, Side Street Studio Arts and the Elgin Cultural Arts Commission will unveil a new public sculpture as part of the Illinois 250 America program. "Pursuit of Happiness," designed by local artist Nathan Adeosun, will be revealed on Saturday, October 10, at 1 p.m. at the corner of S. Riverside Drive and Prairie Street in downtown Elgin. The event is free and open to the public. Nathan Adeosun, a young artist from Elgin, created the concept at the age of 12, envisioning a future America that embodies its founding ideals. Adeosun's design was chosen for its thoughtful symbolism and hopeful outlook. He participated in the initiative that invited youth to imagine the nation's future as part of the state's 250th-anniversary celebrations. The sculpture features a central monumental hand in varied metallic tones, representing the diverse cultures of the nation. Surrounding elements—a butterfly, the Statue of Liberty, a mother and child, and a dancing couple—symbolize rebirth, care, and joy. "This project reflects a future America that is diverse yet united, strong yet peaceful," said Adeosun. The unveiling of "Pursuit of Happiness" marks a significant event in the state's IL250 America initiative, which aims to commemorate the 250th anniversary of the Declaration of Independence through public art. Attendees can enjoy live music and speeches from community leaders. This initiative invites communities to explore the ideals of life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness, fostering a dialogue about the past, present, and future of America.
