This public artwork, a collaborative effort by the East St. Louis Historical Society and the East Side Arts Collective, will grace the west-facing wall of the Sinai Village Apartment and Offices at 1110 Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Drive. It promises to be a vibrant depiction of the area's significant past, from the influence of the Cahokia Indians to the city’s current identity as the "City of Champions."
The mural will explore key historical events and figures, including the founding of Illinoistown (now East St. Louis), Native American impact on the area, the 1917 race massacre, and the cultural heritage of Route 66 and the Green Book. Local artists Mykael Ash, Edna Patterson-Petty, Jennifer Chike, Allena Brazier, and Jered Willis have brought their diverse talents to this project, creating a piece that not only beautifies its surroundings but also acts as an educational tool, inviting viewers to further explore East St. Louis's history.
This event will highlight the power of art in community engagement and historical reflection, marking a significant cultural moment for East St. Louis. The unveiling is set for Saturday, August 29, 2026. It will commence with a program and meal at 10:00 am in the Mount Sinai Church Hall, followed by a short ride to the mural site for the reveal.
