Batavia Artists Association - Illinois 250 America Mural Unveiling
Funding
In celebration of America's 250th anniversary, Batavia Artists Association (aka Water Street Studios) will unveil a significant public art mural that brings to life the town's industrial heritage and its contributions to the nation's history. Created by Illinois-based artist Marty Gniech, the mural is strategically placed on the west-facing wall of the Batavia City Hall, overlooking the Fox River and the expanding Flag Day Monument. This mural features six horizontal arched limestone sections, each telling a key chapter in Batavia's history—from its early days of westward expansion to its contributions to the space age and beyond.
The mural begins with the Newton Wagon Company, highlighting Batavia's role in westward expansion with its durable farm wagons. It moves on to highlight the town's limestone quarries, which played a vital part in rebuilding Chicago after the Great Fire of 1871, and the innovative advertising of the Campana Company in the early 20th century. It also pays tribute to Batavia’s reputation as the "Windmill Capital of the World" and its important role in America's aerospace advancements. The final section looks toward the future, symbolizing ongoing exploration and potential.
The unveiling will take place on Saturday, September 12, 2026, from 10 am to 12 pm, featuring performances by the Batavia Community Band, interactive art stations, and remarks from community leaders. This event not only celebrates Batavia’s historical contributions to America but also strengthens community pride and engagement, marking the town's place in the broader narrative of American history.
