Beth Shadur

Biography: 

Beth Shadur has exhibited widely in solo and group exhibitions in the United States and abroad, including at the Art Institute of Chicago and the Drawing Center in New York City. She has created over 125 large public murals as public, private, and community art projects internationally. She has taught and served as a visiting artist at many colleges and universities. Shadur’s work appears in many publications, books, and catalogues, including Twentieth Century Watercolors (Abbeville Press). Shadur has lectured widely on community arts both in the United States and abroad. She has curated several national exhibitions and been a Ragdale Fellow and a Thomas Watson Fellow from Brown University. Her work is owned in many private and public collections.

Artistic Statement: 

I help students use the tools and vocabulary of the visual arts to express their inner spirits and reflect on their own experiences. In a mural residency, emphasis is placed on the collective and collaborative expression of ideas and creative investigation of the school curriculum. Murals use many skills valuable in an educational setting: higher-level thinking, research, computer, design, and math skills. Team building is the inevitable result of such a collaborative project, as students help each other with painting skills and develop a work that will benefit current and future audiences of the site.
