General FAQ's

Who do I contact for help filling out the application?

Tamara Kubacki
Program Director

Tamara.Kubacki@Illinois.gov

The apprentice is from a different ethnic group than the art form he or she wishes to learn. Will this hurt the application?

The application will be considered, but you may have a disadvantage. Apprentice must show commitment and activity in the community, and he or she must demonstrate a strong interest and skill in the art form.

Application FAQ's

How long should the narrative be?

2 pages, in a font no smaller than 10 point. Be as detailed and concise as possible. Answer the questions in the section Application Narratives.

What is an apprenticeship plan?

An outline of the teaching program or methods which will be followed during the grant period. For more information, refer to the section Apprenticeship Plan.

How important is the documentation?

Very. Submit a minimum of 3 minutes of each person’s work on separate audiotapes, compact discs (CDs), DVDs or VHS videotapes (traditional craft artists should submit 6 to 9 slides per applicant). Samples should be cued to a segment that represents the applicant’s best work. A clear work sample will enhance the application. The jurors rely on the work sample as an example of the applicant’s ability and creativity. Refer to the requirements for Work Samples.

What should the video samples show?

Video samples should be clear recordings of the performance. Cue video cassettes to performance segments that highlight the techniques or skills important to the art form. For example, if feet placement is important to a dance style, show the feet or the entire body during part of the video. When possible, format the DVD to include two links on the menu/title page: the first to the excerpt you wish the jury to review (up to 10 minutes) and the second to the entire piece.

What should the audio samples demonstrate?

Audio samples should be clear recordings of the music or singing. Cue cassettes to the musical segments that highlight the artist’s skill and creativity. For example, if a traditional song has three minutes of vocal warm up, cue the tape at four minutes. Note that introductions or explanations preceding the selection are discouraged.

What should slides show?

Only traditional craft artists should submit slides as work samples. Slides should show the artist’s best work. One close up detail is helpful in determining artistic excellence. See Work Samples section for information on labeling slides.

Can I put the master artist and apprentice on the same video or audio sample?

No. The jurors will not fast forward to the next segment. Two separate samples are required. Label each video or audio sample clearly.

Will the jurors review the entire work samples?

No. The jurors will review no more than 5 minutes of each sample. No more than 18 slides will be shown. Extra documentation will not be reviewed.

Can I send a photo CD?

No. The IAC does not have the capability to view photo CDs at this time.
